Aussie-based Emirates, the second largest airline in the world, announced that it would be offering a 50 per-cent discount on the cost to Australia on flights between Sydney and Auckland on Monday Sept. 25.
“We believe that the introduction of the new fare structure and the reduction in ticket costs will be a win for everyone, including our customers,” Emirates Chief Executive Officer Richard Branson said in a statement.
“With our increased capacity, we are able to offer more value for our customers.
We look forward to seeing the benefits of this move as we scale our services across the continent.”
In November, the Federal Government approved the new policy in response to concerns that the existing low fares were causing congestion and increasing the costs of travelling.
The announcement of a 50-per-cent fare cut came as a result of the New Zealand Government’s decision last year to introduce a new fares system, with New Zealand becoming the first country in the Asia-Pacific region to adopt the policy.
The policy has been praised by the aviation industry, which has lobbied for the introduction for a decade.
However, the move has faced criticism from the Australian government, which argued that the new system was unfair to travellers.
The new fares policy will be effective from Sept. 24, 2018.
This includes flights to Auckland, Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, Darwin and Hobart, but excludes services to Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.
The Federal Government also announced a 50 percent discount on domestic flights from New Zealand to Australia, starting from Sept 26.
